Nagarhole
National Park has traditionally been one of
the great wildlife areas of the South and
used to be the Maharaja’s of Mysore’s private
hunting reserve. Particularly famous for its
wild elephants, the last major elephant capturing
operation in the south, the "Khedda" was held
here on the banks of the Kabini River in 1971.
The large variety of animals at Nagarhole
includes elephant, gaur, 3 species of deer,
pig, leopard and gaur as also close 300 species
of birds.
Wildlife in Nagarhole
National Park:
Mammals: Elephant, gaur,
sambar, cheetal, barking deer, mouse deer,
four horned antelope, wild pig, black-naped
hare, pangolin, Indian porcupine, giant squirrel,
flying squirrel, slender loris, sloth bear,
tiger, leopard, wild dog, striped hyena, jungle
cat, leopard cat, rusty spotted cat, small
Indian civet, otter.
Birds:
cormorants, teals, ducks, waders, herons,
ospreys, grey-headed fishing eagles, crested
hawk eagle, serpent eagle, honey buzzard,
shahin falcon, hobby, king vulture, grey jungle
fowl, red spurfowl, grey partridge Malabar
trogan, Malabar pied hornbill, fairyblue bird,
Indian pitta, scarlet minivet, paradise flycatcher,
Malabar whistling thrush, Imperial pigeon
Safari in
Nagarhole National Park
The forest department offers
mini bus Safari into the park. Jeep Safari
are allowed if you can take in your own jeep
with the permission of the forest department.
However, it is mandatory to take along a guide
on a jeep Safari. Safari begin from the range
office inside the park, 45 km from Hunsur
via Veeranahosahalli.
Elephant rides lasting for
30 minutes are also organised by the forest
department. The joyride comprises of tourists
being taken around on an elephant around the
park.
