Located
at a distance of 46 kms from Delhi,
Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary is a
haven to a variety of domestic
and migratory birds. Artificial
mound, have turned into a green
glade. The marsh has been converted
into a water body. And with the
years, hundreds of species of
migratory birds have winged in
to stay. Winter brings in birds
from as far as Siberia. Flock
of geese from Europe wing in too.
The local birds flap in. The bird
population include darters, egrets
shovellers, gadwell and geese
dominate. Teals, kingfishers,
lapwings, sandpipers; demoiselle
cranes and such like water birds

RANTHAMBORE

Established
as a sanctuary in 1955, this was
one of the original areas covered
by Project Tiger. Situated in
south-eastern Rajasthan, it lies
on a plateau at the junction of
the Aravalli and Vindhya Hills.
Covering 389sq kms, much of the
area comprises arid scrub jungle,
together with forested hills and
artificial lakes. There is an
impressive range of bird life
and animal species include sambar,
chital, nilgai, chinkara, wild
boar, sloth bear, jackal and leopard.
There is also a mighty 1000-year-old
fort, which broods over the park.

SARISKA
WILDLIFE SANCTUARY |

Sariska
became a sanctuary in the year
1958. The sanctuary came under
the project Tiger in 1979 and
became a national park in 1982.
It is located at Kankwari fort,
near Alwar, on the Delhi Jaipur
Highway. The terrain is predominantly
hilly, as it lies in the Aravalli
range. It has total area of 788
sq. kilometres, with a core area

Bandhavgarh
National Park falls within one
of India’s last remaining traces
of substantial forest. Originally
part of the princely state Rewa,
from where the few captive white
tigers came, the forests around
Bandhavgarh were protected for
shoots and hence exist today.
The National Park abounds in many
of India’s rarer and endangered
animals; Cheetal or spotted deer,
Sambar, Barking Deer, Nilgai,
Black Buck, Chinkara, fore horned
antelope, Gaur (the largest of
the world’s wild oxen), Sloth
Bear, Wild Boar, Leopard and the
Royal Bengal Tiger. The park and
surrounding forests have a rich

PANNA

road to Satna passes through this
recently created park, lying along
the River ken, 32 km from Khajuraho.
It contains large areas of unspoilt
forest and a variety of wildlife.
There are tigers here but you'd
be very lucky to see one. The
numerous waterfalls in this area
are popular picnic spots. Day
trips often also take in a visit
to the diamond mines at Majhgawan,
the Rajgarh Palace and the temples
of Panna town, 48 km from Khajuraho.

PENCH

Pench
National Park, nestling
in the lower southern reaches
of the Satpura hills is named
after Pench river which flows
from north to south through the
Pench National Park. It is located
on the southern boundary of Madhya
Pradesh. notified as the Pench
Wildlife Sanctuary in 1977. Further
in 1983, it was accorded the status
of a national park and was made
a part of the project tiger in
1992.

KANHA
NATIONAL PARK |

Situated
in Madhya Pradesh and declared a
national park in 1955, covering
648sq kms and comes under the Project
Tiger. The vegetation comprises
forest with bamboo breaks, grassy
plateaus and meadows in the valleys.
The barasingha (swamp deer) are
one of the park's success stories
with its population having increased
seven-fold in the past 35 years.
Tiger sightings are common. Access
to Kanha is by road from Nagpur
(reached by flight from Mumbai,
Calcutta or Delhi) or by a longer
