| BANDIPUR

Part
of the Project Tiger, covers an
area of 803 sq. kms. Situated
adjacent to the Wayanad plateau
of Kerala, Bandipur National Park
is a rich deciduous forest. It
is located at an average elevation
of 3500 ft. providing a salubrious
climate to the Tiger, the Panther,
Elephants, Gaur (Indian bison),
Sambar, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar,
Chital (spotted deer), Kakar (mountain
deer), Wild Dog and a host of
other mammals and birds. Pythons,
Cobras, Kraits, Vipers and other
reptiles may also be observed

| NAGARHOLE

Situated
in the forests of southern Karnataka,
Nagarhole is famous for its rich
and distinctive wildlife. Established
in 1955, it covers an area of
572sq kms with the Brahmagiri
Hills in the distance. The dammed
Kabini River forms a large reservoir,
helping to provide an ideal habitat
for a varied selection of wildlife.
You may spy large groups of gaur
and elephant along with leopard,
chital and sambar. There are over
250 species of birds and tiger
sightings are possible. Access
to Nagarhole is an easy journey
by road from Ooty, Mysore, Wynad
or Calicut or a longer journey

| PERIYAR
NATIONAL PARK KERALA |

Situated
on the eastern fringes of Kerala,
Periyar was established in 1934
and covers an area of 774sq kms.
The park comprises the rolling
hills of the Western Ghats, which
support rich and varied flora
and fauna. The area open to the
public centres around the 26sq
kms lake and game viewing is done
by boat, gliding through the water,
observing the abundant birds and
wildlife. Birdwatching and elephant
viewing are excellent and tiger
sightings are possible but rare.
Access to Periyar is by road from
Cochin, the 'Backwaters', Thekkady,
Madurai or Kodaikanal. More....

| MUDUMALAI
WILDLIFE SANCTUARY |

The
sylvan hilly terrain of the Western
Ghats render Mudumalai (ancient
hills) a highly attractive wildlife
reserve. The Mysore-Ooty highway
cuts through the Park, trailing
the course of the Moyar river,
which separates Mudumalai from
Bandipur. 321 sq. km. in area,
the sanctuary is home to the wild
elephant, gaur, deer and primates
like the bonnet macaque and langurs.
The predators that inhabit the
park are the tiger, leopard and
the dhole - the Asiatic wild dog
- that hunts in packs.

| KAZlRANGA

Situated
in the eastern state of Assam,
Kaziranga was declared a national
park in 1974. It is a stunningly
beautiful area in the green and
fertile plains beside the mighty
Brahmaputra River, and at the
foot of the Eastern Himalayas.
It is famous for the great Indian
one-horned rhinoceros (on-the
brink of extinction 50 years ago)
and for wild buffalo, hog and
swamp deer (also a threatened
species until recently). Tiger
sightings are common. Access to
Kaziranga is by a road journey
along the Brahmaputra, from Guwahati
(reached by air from Delhi, Calcutta
or Bagdogra). The park is open
from November to 30 June.

Namdapha
National Park in Changlang
district of Arunachal Pradesh
is largest National Park of the
northeast region & one of
the largest Wildlife Protected
Areas In India.. Perhaps no other

a wider altitudinal variation
than the Namdapha national park
that rises from 200m to 4,500m
in the snow-capped mountain. This
variation has given rise to the

| MANAS
WILDLIFE SANCTUARY AND TIGER RESERVE |

Formerly
known as North Kamrup, Manas,
in Assam, was declared a sanctuary
in 1928. In 1985 it was accorded
the status of World Heritage Site.
The park straddles two rivers,
the Manas and its tributary the
Hakua, along the Assam-Bhutan
border. The protected area extends
into the Bhutan foothills. Giant
hornbills Manas houses 19 of India's
most endangered animal populations,
home to the rare golden langur
and a sizeable tiger population.

| SUNDERBANS
NATIONAL PARK AND TIGER RESERVE |

Located
in the Ganga delta in West Bengal,
Sunderbans was declared a National
Park in 1984. The park covers
a vast stretch of mangrove swamp,
lush forested islands and small
rivers near the Bay of Bengal.
Most of the region comprises estuarine
mangrove forests and swamps which
supports an ecosystem specially
adapted to great salinity. Sunderbans
is home to the magnificent Royal
Bengal tiger,it has more tigers
than any other tiger reserve.
Project Tiger has also launched
a programme to protect the Olive
Ridley sea turtles. More....
